Flexible printed circuit board. Also known as flex circuits, flexi-circuits, flex print, and flex PCB, are a group of interconnection and electronic solutions. It consists of a very thin insulating polymer-film that has conductive circuit patterns. These printed circuit patterns are affixed on the film and covered with a thin coating of polymer so as to protect the circuits.

The flexible PCB technology was formerly developed by the aerospace industry for use on spacecrafts and satellites, and is being used since the 1950s. Today, flexible PCB is one of the most popular and important technology for interconnection of circuits and is used in most advanced electronic appliances, gadgets and other products, pertaining to its lightweight and lower space requirement.

As it is lighter than traditional PCB flexible and is smaller in size, it offers the following benefits:
  • Where traditional PCBs need a given space to be mounted upon, flexible PCB can fit into nooks and crannies, offering greater wiring solutions.
  • PCB flexible is lightweight and thin, and is still more durable as compared to traditional ones.3-D packaging geometry.
  • Flexible PCBs are resistant to vibration as well as shock, and can withstand more dynamic than traditional PCBs.
  • It is a miniaturized version of the existing technology.
  • Flexible PCB requires lower numbers of device interconnections.
The benefits stated above points towards flexible PCB being an ideal solution and greater alternation for the mobile consumer electronics. Most modern electronic gadgets found today, including mobiles and laptops, have flexible PCB inside.
